I was hoping there was a way to tell, but if not I might as well just try anyway, and if that doesn’t work I’ll buy a new copy of Windows, and not have to worry about this in the future. An interesting note though is that on my laptop, which I’m pretty sure has an OEM as most laptops do, has a product key ending in OEM, however my desktop does not.
I guess this may just be coincidence though, and not actually mean anything. Found this after a quick bing search for this exact question and the command above worked with my copy of Windows 10 as well, so you could update your message so others like me can search for it too. You appear to be misinterpreting the flexibility they offer people repairing their PC, granted out of necessity, with benevolence or acquiescence. OEM licensing is based on the pairing of the computer purchase with the OS purchase, so that they have identical lifetimes.
Repairing the computer is one thing, replacing it is another. So, if this is an unlikely scenario – which it is, these workstations are not really in need of any upgrades any time soon, then buying an OEM is probably fine. Given that if the motherboard were to fail, it would be a repair and not a replacement. Is that fair to say? I want to make sure I am being clear that I am not trying to ‘work around’ any licensing agreements or do anything even remotely illegal.
Just trying to understand. I buy OEM OSes when appropriate, so no reason not to in your situation, if you think its right for you. I just don’t agree with the basic premise that there is no meaningful difference between the OEM and retail skus other than the price.
