The volume control system is a modified version of the circuit from SuperUniti which seems to use an good, expensive analog domain electronic switches. When I first listened to it, I have observed immediately that the usb input is quite clean and nice but the sound did not impress me beyond that. It was harsh, no enegergy, no impact and lacked dynamics.

This saddened me but I knew that some audio gear really need a good burn in period, so I put it in the oven. After 20h it was a little better but still not good enough. I was starting to wonder about this awesome looking black box. Waited some more and did not touch it until it reached 50h. Well things got better. Some of the harshness was gone, the sound was clearer, fuller. Oh yeah…this is what I am talking about.

This was a really stubborn little bastard. I still think it needs some additional burn in but the sound now was quite awesome. The guitars tickled my ears. The sound was continuous and poured musically. I felt the superior USB input. I really liked the natural tone and texture of the voice.

The soundstage was quite deep the instruments had a full life in that depth. Really loved how the instruments were disappearing and reappearing in that depth. The sound had details but not pushed to your face, the were a little in the back letting the sound to flow smoothly. The piano notes in the back had a really nice extension without any distortions. Well, the experience came close to that in some ways. The sound-stage was again very good, the instruments had good layering and positioning.

It is very airy with a good soundstage, good instrument separation and a very smooth and musical presentation. The sound really flows directly to your heart sometimes with it. Leonard is my reference in voice reproduction and the Dac V1 did quite well on this subject.

The voice was warm, visceral and quite natural. The voices behind, in the chorus were very well layered and completed Leonards voice in a way that the song gave me goose bumps. The instruments played smoothly making way throughout the scene and the voices. Does DAC-V1 know how to rock? Well It can, it is a natural born rocker. These song really impressed me with the it.

The guitars had a very good extension and body. The PRAT was very good, and the drums had a lot of impact. I got stuck here. The presentation was so good I am going to say this is one of the best rock presentation I have heard. I just loved it. Some really had banging happened here while listening to these songs. After burn in it really turns out that the DAC-V1 is not bass shy at all.

The more time I spend with it, the more I like it better. The bass had a very good impact especially with HD The bass could use a little more extension and more control. I still enjoyed LCD2 with it though.

The menu from the V1 has a feature that enables you to set a volume limitation, so you could avoid clipping with this to hide it. With HD it was better. I could feel they were driven better than LCD2 were. I am sure some of you are asking yourself how is it compared to Conductor. Conductor has a better amplification, more controlled and articulate sound with better dynamics, larger soundstage, more details, bigger impact and bass….

However the presentation from DAC-V1 is different and still very enjoyable. It has the specific smooth round sound of Naim. It has musicality combined with energy but still being smooth. You can listen to it for hours without getting tired. The usb input from Naim is clearly superior from the one in Conductor, offering a cleaner sound out of the box and that made me enjoy some of the songs in the tests more than with Conductor.

The sound is detailed but the details are a little in the back letting the sound flow smoothly. Considering the fact that it has audiophielleo technology inside, I was curious to test it against the Hydra.

These said, I really like this new product from Naim and their approach in designing it. Burn in? Give me a break with that snake oil. I could see maybe burning in headphones or speakers, something with actual moving mechanical parts, but a solid state device? Sorry Sergio, but burn-in is a thing. Have encountered it many times and most dramatically just recently.

Easy to hear with my new Sanders amplification, which leaves everything laid bare. Was demoing an Oppo UDP Sounded very disappointing out of the box. Played it for a few hours, and although I think it has significant shortcomings as an audio source, it was dramatically improved from when first fired up.

Audirvana is a French company, founded 10 years ago by Damien Plisson. A first plugin came out, only available for macOS at the beginning, designed like a Foobar nerdy little brother — if the first was not nerdy enough. Because everyone was baffled at how powerful this little piece of code seemed to be. So much, that the company decided to change the name of its latest version: Audirvana Studio. Out of curiosity, I took a free trial first, then decided to take it for a few months, so that I could give you my impressions in the long run.

Audirvana Studio is primarily a third-party player. If you have your own music library as I do, the best options at the moment are Roon and Plex. Both offer a well-designed interface and powerful tools to manage your library. And, to this day, no other options gave me the same level of refinement when sorting my movies and series. Sure, Plex also sorts my music but as good as it is, the sort engine remains sub-optimal, compared to Roon.

A nerdy guy with a passion for audio and gadgets, he likes to combine his DAC and his swiss knife. He likes spreadsheets, technical specs and all this amazing ly boring numbers. But most of all, he loves music: electro, classical, dubstep, Debussy : the daily playlist. A followup review by the author of, Audirvana Studio, working in conjunction with the Dirac Live 3 room-correction software would be greatly appreciated.

Then, I learned that Roon does not perform well that way. Once I learned how to deploy Roon properly, I found that it sounds as good or better than Audirvana, depending on the network bridge.

Audirvana is a computer audio system. Roon is a network audio system that can function as computer audio, albeit poorly. I enjoyed your review, but I wish you had provided more detail on how you set up Roon and compared an optimal Audirvana configuration to an optimal Roon installation. That would have put them on more even footing regarding sound quality. You were spot on about other differences.

I also use a macbook for the core, streaming to a pi with a hat. Everything is just better and more focused with Audirvana. I am open to most things mattering, but I find it to be strange if thats better. I get a suspicion Roon detects if it runs on their own hardward. Very interesting. If be interested to know how it compared to subsonic. Like you, I rely on Plex for movies. I hate Plex for music, as much as I love it for movies.

Switched to subsonic a while back and love the file handling, interface, tag recognition. Would audirvana be worth me spending money on…?

In my system Audirvana sounds better then Roon too. Strang realy, looking at the budget they must spend on interface, advertisement, hardware integration etc. Damien may have done a fantastic job at developing the best music player on the market, but sadly, the software is plagued by usability issues and generally speaking, a mediocre user experience. A large portion of the UI in Audirvana studio is dedicated to streaming services that I am not interested in considering the poor quality of masters you are going to get on those services , but you still have to deal with a UI and monthly-based subscription model that forces you into the online steaming model.

I am sorry to say that for me to be willing to commit to a subscription-based model, the bar should be raised higher: — A decent permanent license software that works. Thanks for the review.

I used the original Audirvana many years ago to get a benefit to the sound quality. Many times the app on iOS will quit on iPhone. The other issue facing Roon right now is a poorly implemented Search. I am trying out Audirvana Studio today and am starting with using it directly connected to my laptop via USB.

And the search was nearly instantaneous. Thanks for the review! I also compared it to the Windows Media Player I had been using for my local library. Audirvana Studio integrates my three sources quite handily with the only a few problems that have been solved along the way.

Thankfully I was able to do it while listening! Damien does support the software and a lot of help can be found on their forum for any problems someone might have. Count me as a contented subscriber. I opted for Audirvana, which will happily playback the highest quality source files in any number of formats, including FLAC.

Audirvana will also link up with iTunes, so that you can control it via iTunes, including the use of remote apps. Pretty damn amazing to be frank!

For speakers I went with a nalm of Dali Mentor Menuetskeeping the entire system pretty compact. Even compressed MP3 or AAC source material sounded pretty fantastic through this setup, although if you encode below kbps for MP3 the overall effect is somewhat narrow, especially when compared to uncompressed or lossless audio.

Firing up some Simon and Garfunkle produced similarly stunning results. A large portion of the UI in Audirvana studio is dedicated to streaming services that I am not interested in considering the poor quality of masters you are going to get on those services , but you still have to deal with a UI and monthly-based subscription model that forces you into the online steaming model.
