Redirecting the Users folder is not recommended because it would lead to installation failure of future updates. How much space are you able to gain if you move Downloads, Documents, Desktop folder to the other drive which officially is supported? At the end of the article, you can see the tutorials for other folders too, like Downloads and Documents. You would be prompted to move the existing contents for which you need to press yes.

Well, you’ll be relieved to know that apparently OneDrive now does that automatically with fresh installs. How did I find out? After a format, my OneDrive exploded because it tried to upload some 50GB of my game saves. Also, for everyone who can’t put the directory out of OneDrive: log out of OneDrive.
Otherwise, it may error out. That’s an option that defaults to This PC only. Aha, good to know thanks. I assume I’ll still ahve to do some manual repointing even with the new settings?
Been doing this for the past twenty five years Mauro Huculak, you’re doing a great job out here, a thanks wouldn’t sum it up. Appreciate the feedback! I don’t understand why there’s not a default, easy way to do this.
Users are promised some great cloud storage with OneDrive, but their files don’t even save there by default! You’re right, there should be an easier way. But now it already defaults to OneDrive during a fresh install of Windows. And I can tell you, it will annoy the crap out of a lot of people, me included.
Many games and programs save their stuff in Documents folder. Saves, mods, all sort of content. My Documents folder has some 50GB. My OneDrive limit is half of it. And the standard free limit is 5GB. I was never asked to migrate this stuff to OneDrive, and it took more time than it should have to make it normal again. Actually it is there by default but that depends on the users themselves making that choice at first boot of their installation.
Reason two maybe because of the application itself being out of date therefore isn’t going to save the files in the proper place which is less likely the case but it is possible. Takes me a few seconds to move user folders on a new install. How do you change OneDrive to another drive? Can you use an SD card as the other drive? I moved the default folders Download , Documents, Desktop , etc a while ago and everything was fine, until I installed the “Windows 10 April Update”.

But you can move it to another pc. In a nutshell, two groups of Windows 10 or Windows 11 users want to move Users folder. One group wants to relocate the folder to free up system disk space; the other group only wishes to make a copy of users folder to some other place, for example, from C: to E:, from HDD to SSD, from one drive to another drive, etc.
Step 2. Click This PC, choose the target hard drive from the devices and drives option. Step 3. Open the new drive location, choose the location where you want to save. Step 5. Right-click the Documents or Downloads folder, then choose Properties. Step 6. Select the Location tab, then click Move to choose the new file location. Click OK to apply. Step 1. Input regedit and press Enter. As you can tell, the three-way mentioned above is associated with the change file location in a manual way.
One of two ways is kind of tricky; you can hardly start without in-depth instruction. Besides, one noticeable fact is that all three methods won’t help when you consider moving more folders at one time to another drive on another computer.

With more and more computers coming with two 2 drives, managing the free space can be daunting. And the biggest space hog on your computer is your personal folders. So here is how to change the default location of your personal folders in Windows And by default, Windows 11 saves everything to the same drive as the operating system. But after a while, your personal folders can get quite large, with all of the music , pictures , and videos you save to your computer.
And with Windows 11 saving all of these files on the same drive as the OS and program files, the possibility of running out of free space is quite real. And if that drive is an SSD , your personal folders are taking up valuable real estate that could be used for other uses, like more programs. So why not move your personal folders to another drive? Now relocating your personal folders is relatively easy, but there are a few guidelines you want to be aware of.
When it comes down to it, the location of your personal folders is set inside of the registry. I include the instructions on restoring the locations of your personal folders via the registry later in this article. Note: You can remap your personal folders to any drive or folder that has a drive letter assigned to it in File Explorer. It is recommended only to use drives that are built into your computer, not external and network drives.
Remember that if you lose connection with an external or network drive, you will also lose connection to your personal folders. To restore the default location of your personal folders , just navigate to the personal folder you want to restore and right-click on it.
From the context menu that appears, select Properties and then Location. Left-click on the Restore Default button and follow the prompts. If you receive an error when trying to restore the default location of any personal folder , you can manually change the location by editing the registry.
Note: Editing the registry incorrectly can render your computer unusable! If you do not feel comfortable editing your computer’s registry, please contact a local computer repair technician for assistance. Here is a list of the six 6 personal folders , the r egistry key , and the default value. Change only the keys for the folders you are having problems with. Once you are done editing the registry, log out or restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

On Windows 10, each account has a set of default folders that allow users to save and organize their files, including documents, pictures, downloads, and other data on the device. However, over time, depending on your usage, the folders can grow in size significantly, and if you have a computer with limited storage using a different location for example external hard drive or partition can help to avoid running out of space on the system drive, which can be an issue when it comes the time to install new releases of Windows 10 or a new application.
Also, you never want to use a device with a drive at capacity as it can affect system performance. In this Windows 10 guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to move the default user account folders to a different drive or partition. Once you complete the steps, the default account folders will move to the new location, and future files will save in this location by default.
Although moving folders one at a time introduces additional steps, you’ll avoid potential problems, which may be something that could happen while moving the main account folder. After you complete the steps, the account folder will relocate to its original location. You may need to repeat the steps to restore the remaining folders to their previous location. The only caveat about this process is that it’ll not change the default save locations for some apps.
For example, if you use the Edge, Chrome, or Firefox, these browsers will continue to use the original path to try and save files. If you want to avoid problems, it’s recommended to change the default save location for these and other apps if applicable. Here’s an example changing the settings on Microsoft Edge:. Once you complete the steps, future files will download to the new location by default in the new storage.
