Only one important thing I should mention. Unfortunately I did not know there was a code in the back of the book needed to retrieve online lesson files to follow along with the book. Lesson learned. Indesign is probably the gold standard of publication layout programs. It definitely has much more capability than a word processor, but it is a complex program.

Like Photoshop, one will never learn all the tricks without some guidance. I’ve taken about ten of the lessons in the book. The book is well written, and most times I’ve had no problems following the instructions.

I have the ebook on my iPad and do the exercises on my desktop or laptop computer. The only real problem is that the illustrations of the icons in the instructions are too small on the iPad as they would be on a Kindle ; however the program’s tool tips are a big help in finding the correct icon. One person found this helpful. I have just completed the sixteen lessons in this book and have learned a great deal. When you’re anchoring a graphic, for example, you must find a small blue box — perhaps 5×5 pixels — and drag that onto a paragraph. If you grab the box or graphic itself, it won’t work.

The text becomes less clear about these nuances as one gets further into the book. I’ve completed the first two chapters through page 51 of the Kindle edition using the downloaded samples with no glitches, hang-ups, mysteries or failed instructions.

Nothing fancy. It just works. I got this book so that I would understand InDesign and not improvise my actions while I work on projects. I want to work smart, not hard.

This book gives a great overview of the software, but I’m not sure how well it prepares a person for the Adobe Expert certification exam.
