Helpful advice, Greyfox. I wonder if using a pen and Wacom tablet to perform the steps that you described would make it easier. Your thoughts? Originally posted by Mamiya2Nikon View Post. Personaly, I use Vertus Fluid Mask. A little expensive but very efficient. Thank you for the response If so, is the the preferred most efficient route or standalone? Thanks in advance,. It works here as a plugin from Edit mode in U see also disclosure below. I haven’t tried it with any other version of ACDSee.

Question: If so, is the the preferred most efficient route or standalone? My choice is to use it as a plugin because: a when I use masking software, it is generally followed by some other editing work, so saves having to manually transfer files. I can’t answer that. I did purchase Fluid Mask 3 when it first came out, and used it for a while, but after a change of Windows, Fluid Mask wouldn’t start and at that stage I wasn’t able to get in touch with Vertus.

I eventually came to the conclusion that Fluid mask was no longer available and I stopped using it. At the time I moved to Topaz Remask 5 which I found easier to use, and was using that as a plugin from U and U In general I’m quite pleased with it so far, however see the disclosure below. Disclosure: I’ve had no problems with Mask AI doing what it should, and returning the cutout or image compilation back into U as I would expect, however if having done some work in Mask AI, I then decide to abandon that work and just cancel out of Mask AI, it does puts up an “Error- plug in has crashed” on return to U Whilst that has so far left U running, it then isn’t possible to re-engage Mask AI again without first restarting U Luckily, I’ve found that if I want to cancel back to U, I can do that by clicking on the red exit cross at the top right instead of clicking on the cancel button and it then returns to U without creating the error, and can subsequently be re-entered as a plugin without restarting U Smart Erase is designed for touch ups, rather than a complete overall of half an image.

I begin by selecting the image I want to manipulate in the File List pane in Manage mode. Then enter Edit mode. Once in Edit mode, there are two ways I can approach removing objects from my image: brushing or selecting.

I used a larger brush and ham-handedly go over it. On the other hand, obviously, it erases best when the background is solid, simple, free of patterns, without a lot of color variation. So, if I try to brush something where the surrounding area is more complicated, with greater variation, it may require some clever handling. Therefore, I use some discretion as to how ham-handed I should be. The only way to figure this out is through experimenting.

So, as I just exhibited, some things just need a quick once over. While others can be more complicated. However, sometimes it can surprise you. For instance, did you know this pic used to have another lady in it? To erase an object using a Selection tool, I need to choose how to make my selection. Some work better for this case than others. I recommend the Freehand Lasso, which involves simply dragging a line around the object, and then when I let go of the mouse button, it auto-completes.

To add to my previous post. I have raised the issue with Topaz Labs Support. In the meantime, as I indicated, there is a work around, and that works for both U and Affinity Photo..

Thank you Greyfox, very helpful! For Vertus Fluid Mask, the software works perfectly standalone with W I use it since a long time. But I think Greyfox is right : it’s no longer available. Last edited by Framon ; , AM. Greyfox : I hope you’ll understand my English I read somewhere that Remask 5 is better than Mask AI. What is your opinion on this? A friend of mine has a 2 workstation version and offers me to buy the second license that he does not use. Do you think this is a good solution? Another question: how can you explain that AI is more than 1 Gb?

In other words, the end of the line connects to the start. This helps with making a really loose selection so that ACDSee has more background information to work with.

Then I repeat as many times as is necessary to get the results I want. This may involve changing the selected area. To make another section, I choose Select Deselect. And then select anew. I find that often making a smaller selection the second time around can lead to more variance in the fill, which results in a natural look.

Its something on my bucket list I’ve yet to get around to.

Whilst I understand U doesn’t support pen pressure If I’m wrong about that please let me know , I still think in terms of at least the selection brush options in U a pen should give more control than a mouse, particularly around edges. It might also provide more accuracy selecting thin objects like hair, whiskers, or thin tree branches. Originally posted by Framon View Post. Greyfox All rights reserved. Yes No. OK Cancel.

You can easily get rid of flaws with the Smart Erase tool. You erase unwanted objects by brushing them with the Smart Erase Brush enabled, releasing your cursor, and then watching as the object is removed for you. You can also make a selection, and then apply Smart Erase to achieve your goals. I have recently returned from vacation, and with me, I brought home a few thousand photos. But I have no fear! I can remove unwanted objects from my images by selecting or brushing them and using the Smart Erase function.

Smart Erase will analyze the image and predict how to best fill in the brushed or selected area with the most likely, natural background. Smart Erase is designed for touch ups, rather than a complete overall of half an image. I begin by selecting the image I want to manipulate in the File List pane in Manage mode. Then enter Edit mode.
